Saturday, February 25 | 9a-12p | The Box
Come discover how dramatically different life in Ames can be for families of different social and economic backgrounds. Attenders at this event will take part in a poverty simulation, living for a month as a family impacted by poverty, and then hear from Travis Pierce and Dr. Anthony Jones on knowing and understanding the difficulties inherent to changing life patterns. Childcare will not be provided for this event.
Trainings for Rosebud, Adoptive, and Foster Care Families
A myriad of trainings exist that foster, adoptive, and Rosebud families can be involved in. The following trainings are offered at Cornerstone and are open not just to foster families receiving training hours, but for all families working to love and parent hard-to-love-and-parent kids.
Issues in Interracial Adoption
January 26, 2017 | 6:15-7:45p | Equipping Room | 1.5 Hours Foster Credit
Adoption, foster care and the Rosebud exchange program often produce families made up of different races and ethnic backgrounds. This can lead to unique situations and conversations with extended family, friends and strangers alike, not to mention questions of identity children may face as they grow older. Dr. Anthony Jones will lead this meeting, incorporating valuable input from the Cory Wandling family. Childcare is available for those who register on or before January 20.
Get to Sleep! Stay Asleep!
February 16, 2017 | 6:15-7:45p | Equipping Room | 1.5 Hours Foster Credit
Occupational Therapist, Elise Spronk, will discuss the importance of sleep and how proper sleep impacts learning and behavior in children and adolescents. She will also provide tips to help children fall asleep more easily or stay asleep if frequent waking is an issue. Through this interactive seminar, participants will be able to identify environmental and sensory factors to improve the body clock and improve sleep.
