TO RAISE UP NEXT-GENERATION LEADERS
Raising up next-generation leaders is a significant part of Cornerstone’s vision. The Cornerstone School of Theology is one of the primary ways that we equip these future church leaders to carry the gospel. As a resident, CST students get to not only receive theological education, but to engage in ministry, first-hand. These profiles show how the gospel has transformed their lives and how they’re bringing that hope to the next generation.
Rooted and Affirmed
Before I knew Christ, I wrestled with insecurity in the image I created of myself among my family and friends. I was involved in anything and everything, because I was “Emily Sandvold”, so why wouldn’t I be? I was constantly seeking ways to be noticed and draw attention to myself.
In eighth grade, I clearly heard and accepted the gospel and was able to delight in my new identity found in Jesus Christ. I had been looking for love and affirmation, and I found it in Jesus. After that, though, I still had one foot in both worlds and it was hard to let go of that identity I made for myself. That continued into the start of college. Freshman year was my breaking point where God said, “If you don’t trust me to provide for you completely, then I’m going to take away everything you do trust in.” And that was great for me. I no longer needed the affirmation from those around me because I was deeply rooted and affirmed in the love that was displayed on the cross. God has graciously adopted me into His Kingdom and I can rest in the identity He has provided me as His daughter.
I currently serve as a resident for The Salt Company, where I am taking CST classes, discipling student leaders, and meeting up with girls throughout the week. I have the opportunity to walk through life with girls as they journey through college and encourage them as they follow Jesus along the way. I also have the privilege of teaching a class called “Theology of the Gospel”, where students learn basic theology and how to begin applying the truth learned from Scripture into their lives.
My CST classes have enriched my personal Bible reading, leadership skills, small group discussions, and theological knowledge. Everything I’ve learned is applicable to my job in ministry as well as my personal life. And it has been fun to see how God is using the knowledge I have gained to grow my love for Him and His word. CST classes have provided me with a solid foundation where I can stand firm in the knowledge I have of the infinite and divine Creator that we have the privilege of calling our Heavenly Father.
I see God putting me in ministry to continue developing relationships with girls, discipling and leading them towards a path that results in eternal life. I see myself staying in college ministry, and I know international ministry is in my near future. I may not know the specifics, but I know that every time I’ve said “Yes” to God, He’s provided in full. How can I ever say “No” to that?
